Preliminary Phase
Characteristics
- Easily distracted.
- Cannot concentrate for long periods of time.
- Too playful to take soccer seriously.
- Egocentric, no feeling for team work.
A typical feature of a game involving very young children is that they all want the ball.
Objectives
- Familiarity through play.
- Gaining control over the ball.
- The ball is the most important obstacle.
- Always in small sided games where each player gets as many ball contacts as possible.
The basic techniques must be acquired during this phase, Players must be able to kick, dribble, stop the ball in order to be able to take part in a game of soccer.

Technique
This encompasses the basic skills necessary to play the game. No matter how small the children are, or however elementary the standard of play. The players possess a certain degree of technical skill.
Insight
Insight into the game is necessary in order to understand what actions are appropriate pr inappropriate in a given situation. Insight is largely a question of experience and soccer intelligence.
Communication
Communication in this context refers to the interaction between the players and all the elements involved in the game, such as verbal and non verbal, interaction of the ball (speed/weight/hard/soft), spectators, officials, the pitch, coach etc.
Drills
- Passing (furtherest foot).
- Heading.
- Control.
- Fast Feet (ladder work, hurdle work)
